Which Steps To Stop Smoking Will Prove Effective?

Steps to stop smoking can be difficult to take even for the most determined of souls, because there is always going to be a fear planted within the inner mind which will make them apprehensive. This fear will need to be overcome by proving to the mind that the body can not only survive without smoking, but it can even prosper and be far better off without smoking. There are various techniques which can be used for this, either in conjunction with an advisor or alone.

It is important to distinguish right at the start between two entirely separate approaches to quitting smoking, both of which involve steps and stages. The first of these is the actual quitting of smoking in stages, which is something that was more popular in the past when the statistics were not so well known. People would try to cut down the number of cigarettes they smoked gradually, until they were able to ease off completely. On the face of it, the approach seems logical, but there are serious problems with it. As the dose is reduced, the body begins to feel the symptoms of withdrawal even though no complete withdrawal has been made. The problem is that these symptoms are felt when the individual is still a smoker both in belief and in reality, making it far more likely that the reduction program will not endure.

The statistics demonstrate amply that there is a far higher chance of quitting smoking successfully when the choice is made to stop in one go. This is because the cravings and symptoms of withdrawal will come at a time when at least some level of the mind will identify with being a non-smoker. This creates challenge and resistance, but the will is far more likely to triumph than in a situation where the individual is still a smoker with the addiction unbroken.

The other approach with steps to stop smoking is the approach which knows and decides that the smoking habit will have to be stopped in one go, but where there are preparatory steps which can be taken in advance of this. There are many who try to stop smoking and fail at first, only to persevere and eventually succeed. This often happens because the level of commitment increases with subsequent attempts to quit. People often say they want to quit smoking simply because it sounds like the right thing to say, and they may be under peer pressure to quit. Only when the level of commitment rises to a high enough level will any method have a chance of working.

If you are still unsure of your level of commitment, try reading some of the pertinent facts about the effects of smoking on the body, especially facts on the effects of lung and throat cancer, emphysema, and heart disease. This can be the first step toward convincing the mind that the body needs to become smoke free. Watching video of the effects of smoking can be even more effective, as the hypnotic effect of TV can imprint it into the inner mind. Taking the psychological step of making sure that you are ready to quit can save you losing time and money.

When the first steps to stop smoking have been taken and your mind is right for you to quit, then you can either just decide to stop and rely on your will power to fight off the inevitable cravings, or you can use a technique such as hypnotherapy to plant suggestions into your mind which will override the desire to smoke. Once the choice has been made to smoke no more, you can then further increase your chances of success by staying away from triggers which habitually made you smoke. As time goes by, you will need less protection from these triggers, and you can then complete the final steps to stop smoking.
